Things to Consider in Renting an Apartment
To make an informed decision on what apartment to lease, check out the following things you must consider:
- Security
- Condition
- Location
- Space and Floor
- Amenities
- Price
The purpose of gates in a complex is actually to moderate traffic level. If gates are broken or left open, ask a courtesy officer to respond. Also, check your local police department‘s website for crime statistics. Know your prospective apartment’s location within the complex layout. It may be easy to move furniture to corner and ground floor apartments but are more prone to burglary.
Check if the appliances, plumbing, and wiring in the apartment are all in good working condition. Ask about emergency maintenance and their track record on timely response for repair requests. Ask around the neighborhood and browse through the comments of previous tenants in the apartment’s website. Take all viewpoints so to make an informed decision.
An apartment close to public transportation or your work reduces your gas costs. Consider easy access to freeways especially when you are driving to multiple locations every week. Apartment living is fairly short term since apartment occupancy turnover is high so you need not be excited with new neighbors.
Moving a whole family to an apartment requires a larger space and a specific number of bedrooms. Consult a leasing agent to know what is required by your city law. You can also visit a sample unit and websites to seek assistance in finding the right apartment for you.
Many properties offer access to gym, pool or playground at reasonable prices. But make sure to inquire about the maintenance of such amenities because you do not want to pay extra to facilities that are malfunctioning.
The ratio of rent to income must be considered. Get an apartment you can afford. Find a roommate if needed, just to make sure you will meet your monthly payments. Do not immediately agree to the first price offered to you.
