“Mad” Qualities of the Best Home Rental Seekers
Looking for a home rental is a challenge that needs a dose of wit, common sense, and ironically, certain madness.
Be a stalker. Decide on whether to go for short term home rentals or long term home rentals, then rev up that engine and look around. Canvass neighborhoods and ask real estate agents for home rental listings. Visit the apartment not just once, but twice and even more. Visit it at various times of the day, and ensure that you do not get stuck with noisy neighbors who love doing karaoke during your quiet time at home.
Be obsessive compulsive about details. Read the lease many times. Check for conditions such as who should be responsible for maintenance repairs, and what the penalty is for breaking the lease. Make sure that the home rental has an automatic clause renewal and that the building has a fire escape. If you’re a dog-lover, then make sure that Fido is allowed to romp about. Ask the landlord to write all stipulations down. Remember that you’re signing a binding contract and not just responding to an RSVP for a year-long party.
Be a little bit Androphobic…and social at the same time. Have a fear of men…or at least your landlord and possible thieves (not to mention the local Jack the Ripper). Do not sign a lease that allows the landlord to go in and out of your apartment without your knowledge. Only in cases of emergency should this be allowed. Also, make sure that the community is secure. Ask the landlord if an extra lock could be placed on the door for added protection. On the other side, be more social and get to know the neighbors. See if you can imagine yourself living next door to Mr. Smith who loves polka dots on his shirt.
Being a little bit “mad” is simply using plain old common sense when looking for the best homes for rent.
